Zero2Sixty: Video Production Tips
This episode covers – tips on effective ways to add camera movements to achieve different camera angles by using a tripod during the filming process to add visual diversity to your video.

Top Tripod Camera Movements

There are two tripod camera movements you should know and use wisely during video production:

Pan

This is basically a slow rotation of the camera, either from left to right or right to left. Pan is often used to showcase the surroundings, regardless if your specific surrounding is made up of buildings, nature, or people. It is also used for establishing the setting’s ambiance as well as capturing or expressing motion.

Tilt

Similar to the Pan, this movement requires rotating the camera. Contrary to the Pan, however, the Tilt moves upward or downward. Among camera movements, this technique is being used to emphasize a subject’s vertical importance, for example, how a tall building looks scary or intimidating in a character’s point of view.

Aside from Pan and Tilt, you might also want to take note of Pedestal and Dolly In:
•Pedestal—here, the shot moves upward or downward. However, unlike in Tilt where only the camera angle is changed, Pedestal requires you to move the whole camera, making sure it stays parallel with the subject. This camera movement got its name from the camera support it requires—a pedestal.
•Tracking—this camera movement is best for smooth tracking and zooming in or out. This camera movement is also known as “dolly in.”

Tips for Flawless Camera Movements

If diamonds require polishing for them to shine, your camera movements require specific handling or equipment for them to look smooth and flawless. Here are some tips to observe for getting smooth camera movements:

Establishing Shots with Wide-Angle Lens

To maximize and beautify your camera movements, especially the Pan movement, it is best to use wide-angle lens. Wide-angle lens help you capture scenes and all the necessary details like people’s expressions, small objects, and the like with ease. Although expensive, wide-angle lenses are a must-have item for professional video producers since they provide your shots with perspective and depth.

Shots captured with a wide-angle lens produce a nice, 3D effect wherein nearby objects appear bigger while farther objects appear smaller. A wide-angle lens also allows you to capture a wider area. This is beneficial and convenient for when you are trying to capture a huge subject but there is no more space for you and your camera to move backward.

Getting Steady Detail Shots

Shakey shots might seem appealing if you want to share how the environment or other people look based on a character’s perspective. However, shakey shots throughout the video will only make your viewers annoyed. If your viewer is annoyed, there will lesser chances for you to gain his or her trust and support. You do not want that to happen. To get smooth and clear shots, you have to spend some extra bucks for durable video production equipment such as tripod, pedestal, and dolly.

Using different camera movements can produce a stunning effect, both in film and videos. Try any or all of the aforementioned techniques, and you will surely see the difference in your final products.
