Adam’s Eden Fly Fishing School

No experience is necessary and all equipment will be provided.
The half day school is designed to give individuals an introduction to the basics of fly fishing. Throughout the day, we will cover several different topics. The end goal is to provide each participant with the basic knowledge they will need to get out and fish on their own. Topics covered will include:
-Equipment and Setup
-Basic Casting Techniques
-Knots and Leaders
-Fly Selection
The half day school will be approximately 4 hours in length. Here is a rough itinerary for an 8AM start:
8:00-8:30 – Introductions, Overview of the day, Introduction to equipment.
- Properly putting together a fly rod
- Attaching a fly reel to your rod
- Lining up your rod
- The relationship between rods, reels, and fly lines; why do we choose one over another?
- Leader and Tippet introduction
8:30-9:45 – Casting and Mechanics
- Bow and Arrow Cast
- Roll Casting
- Pick Up and Lay Down Cast
- False Casting
9:45-11:00 – Knots, Entomology, Fly Selection (ideally done indoors at a large table, this
part of the class allows people to get off their feet and have a quick snack
and a drink)
- Surgeons knot
- Surgeons loop
- Improved clinch knot
- Blood knot
- Basic Entomology (mayflies, caddis, stoneflies, and other invertebrates)
- Picking the right fly
- Essential Flies
11:00-12:00 – During the last hour, students will have the opportunity to go through the
process of setting up their own rod and reel, picking out and tying on their own fly,
and fishing for the remainder of the class
